STAGES WITH THE BULLOCH PROFESSIONAL MICROSCOPE OF c. 1880:
This microscope was provided with two stages. Both can rotate around the optical axis. One is a mechanical stage which is limited to about
300 degrees of rotation due to the protruding, but concentric controls. This stage has X-axis movement actuated by worm-screw, Y-axis by straight
rack and pinion. The slide is held in place by moveable slide rests, the top one with a post for a stage forceps or other accessory. There is also
a small knob on the left side to register the left side of the slide. Bulloch later made a mechanical stage which could fully rotate by placing the controls on top of the stage as seen in the
Biological and Congress Models on this website.
The second stage is a glass-surfaced
version with a silvered bevelled edge calibrated in one degree divisions, numbered every twenty degrees. The glass is a modern replacement, made according to the original description. The slide holder is held down by a single screw with knob and an ivory tip. The ivory tip acts on a small circular piece of glass. The slide holder is virtually identical to the original, but was made by Beck. The two are exactly the same size and finished the same way with only minute differences. Under the glass, the stage has concentric rings engraved on the brass surface. Please scroll down for more images.
