Shown in the images on this page is the Smith & Beck Best NO 1 microscope as modified in the 1860's, and its associated case. Note the fancy 'N' monogram at the top of the front door.
When packed, the bench condenser must be inserted first, before the microscope. Then the microscope and the accessory boxes may be added.
Note that the method of storing the Bench condenser, at an angle in back of the microscope, did not change over the years.
This case for the Smith & Beck Best No 1 Microscope is quite similar to the engraving shown which is from Beck's 1865 Treatise and was also used in later catalogs. Note that the draw tube in the engraving is stored on the main cabinet, not in one of the accessory cases which is how it is stored for this microscope.
