silver side reflector

silver side reflectorAccording to E.M. Nelson, the silver side reflector was said to be invented by Andrew Ross about 1836. Since the microscope it accompanies dates from about 1837 this may be one of the earliest examples of it. This device was used to help concentrate light from a light source such as an oil lamp onto an opaque object. This example is slightly different than the one supplied with the later Ross Bar Limb microscopes, where the instrument is hinged closer to the main steel support, as opposed to the T-shaped stem on this instrument.
