THE POWELL & LEALAND No 1

ACCESSORY: VERTICAL ILLUMINATOR

MAKER: Powell & Lealand

Authors: Jurriaan de Groot & Barry Sobel

Editor: Joseph Zeligs

vert illuminator glassThis fine vertical illuminator is signed Powell & Lealand, London. As can be seen to the right, it utilizes a fixed angled piece of polished glass which serves as a reflector for the incoming light onto the specimen, and at the same time it permits the light image from the specimen to pass through it, up the body tube. Unlike the Beck-type of illuminator, the angle is fixed, and the glass is much thicker than a coverslip. There is a wheel of four different size apertures allowing one to vary the diameter of the light beam entering the apparatus to illuminate the object being studied. A spring stop facilitates centering each aperture over the opening.
