The case for the Hartnack Grand Model microscope is made of mahogany. It features hidden dovetail construction. The lid is lined with a cushion covered in purple silk. The top has a nameplate with Carl Ewald's name engraved on it. It has two locks, keyed alike. Inside the case are two removable compartments with sliding lids to house many of the accessories.
It should be noted that the case was severely damaged in transit. It was tastefully restored back to good usable condition with little outward evidence of its breakage. If one removes the contents from the case, the remains of some of the repairs can be seen in the bottom image on this page. White arrows point to damage to the cushion from longterm contact with the edge of the microscope stage and the edge of the bullseye base. The red arrows highlight remnants of the repairs/damage visible inside the case when the contents are removed. In the author's opinion, these repairs do not interfere with the function of the case nor detract much from its appearance.
