The apochromatic objective is (and was) the ultimate in high resolution lenses for the microscope. Although nowadays flat field planapochromats are available, these were not available in the early 20th century. These lenses offered the highest possible resolution for a light microscope at the time. The Zeiss Apos, offered at the time this microscope was made were particularly pricey-the 4mm was 7 £.
