This page illustrates the attachment of the stage goniometer to the Powell & Lealand stage. To use the goniometer attachment, the slide-holding plate is removed by sliding off forward. Shown to the left is the microscope stage with the slide-holding plate still attached. This leaves the piece underneath it exposed (right). This piece can rotate.

The goniometer slides on to take its place. The piece that holds either the slide-holder or the goniometer has a cylinder on its bottom, allowing the slide holder or the goniometer to rotate.

The image to the left shows the stage goniometer replacing the ordinary slide holder. The microscope arm is turned to the left for clarity.
