This image shows the mirror, which surrounds the inner optical tube, reflects light down the outer rim of the objective lens, which after illuminating the object, is reflected back through the central part of the objective. Thus the outer part of the objective lens is used for the path of illuminating light, while the center of the objective receives the reflected illuminated image light.
