COMPARISON OF THE BULLOCH 'C' AND THE ZENTMAYER ARMY HOSPITAL MICROSCOPES

Comparing Bulloch 'C' stand to the Zentmayer Army Hospital Model

The illustration above shows the striking similarity of Walter Bulloch's 'C' stand to Joseph Zentmayer's Army Hospital Model. Since the Zentmayer stand originated many years earlier, it is clear that Bulloch was copying Zentmayer. The similarities include the foot, the short pillar, nosepiece short lever focus, the swinging tailpiece and the glide stage(invented and patented by Zentmayer). The only major differences seem to be the stage shape, and the method of attaching the mirror to the tailpiece. Zentmayer's stage is square, Bulloch's round. Bulloch's mirror support had a screw going through a slot in the tailpiece to anchor the position of the mirror whereas Zentmayer had a solid tailpiece over which slides a mirror support sleeve without an anchoring screw. The mirrors have slightly different enclosures. The nosepiece adjustment screw on Zentmayer's pushes down on the lever, and Bulloch's pushes up. Although the Bulloch has a hole in the limb for an accessory, the limbs of each are nearly identical in shape.
