objectives OBJECTIVES:

There are five objectives with this outfit, all in their original cans. They include a 3 inch, a 2/3 inch, a 4/10 inch, a short-barelled 1/4 inch with correction collar, and a 1/8 inch with correction collar, all by Swift. All the cans are signed with the maker's name and their focal length on their lids, and all the cans are labeled on their bottom with the focal length alone, e.g. 3 in or 14 in.   There is one Lieberkuhn reflector which fits all the low power objectives.

The 4/10 is in a can signed ' SWIFT & SON, * 410 in *, LONDON '. This objective is labeled on its barrel: ' 4/10 in '. All the other cans are labeled J.Swift, without the son being mentioned.

Swift Objectives

The 3 inch can is signed: ' J.SWIFT, * 3IN *, LONDON '. The objective is labeled ' 3 in '.

The 2/3 inch is in an older can, engraved entirely in script: ' 23 rds, J. Swift, London '. The objective is labeled on its barrel: ' 2/3 IN '.

The 4/10 inch objective is in a can labeled: ' SWIFT & SON, * 410 IN *, LONDON '. The objective itself is signed: ' 4/10 IN '.

correction collarcorrection collar The short barrel 1/4 inch objective is in a can labeled: ' J. SWIFT, * 14 in *, LONDON '. It has a correction collar with an arrow pointing to the numbers on it. The correction collar is calibrated in single units from 0 to 15, labeled every 5, from 0 to 15. An arrow on the barrel indicates the setting. This objective is labeled on the correction collar itself:' 1/4 in ' and is labeled on the barrel ' JAMES SWIFT LONDON ' to the left of the moving indicator and ' COVERED ' to the right of it. Like most objectives with correction collars, it has a line in the middle of the moving bar, and the covered position is reached when the line passes below the fixed indicator line on barrel of the objective, though the 'covered' range is very narrow compared to the objective described next. The uncovered positions are above the fixed line. The correction collar action of this objective is very stiff and difficult to move. The illustration to the right is from a different example of the same model of objective.

correction collarcorrection collar The 1/8 inch objective is in a can labeled: ' J. SWIFT, * 18 in *, LONDON '. It also has a correction collar with an arrow pointing to the numbers on it. The correction collar is calibrated in single units from 0 to 15, labeled every 5, from 0 to 15. There is a moving indicator bar with an engraved line which moves in a slot from above the line(uncovered position) to below it(covered position), a fixed line on the barrel serving to indicate the transition point. The objective is labeled on the barrel: ' 1/8 in '. The objective is also labeled to the left of the sliding piece: ' JAMES SWIFT ' above the fixed transition line on the barrel, and ' LONDON ' beneath that line. To the right of the sliding bar it is labeled: ' UNCOVERED ' above the fixed transition line and ' COVERED ' below it.
