This device replaces the ordinary cap on a top-hat eyepiece. The microscope is place in a horizontal position. As the observer looks down(see illustration below)a prism allows the observer to see the image of the object being studied while it is superimposed on the paper below so the object may be drawn as a tracing. The glass frames are neutral density filters to regulate the brightness of the drawing paper so the superimposed drawing is not so bright as to outshine the object projected from the microscope to the eye.
