C. 1885

MODEL: 'POLARIZING APPARATUS COMPLETE WITH SELENITES'

The Ross Polarizing microscope Condenser

nosepiece analyzer This is the exact apparatus pictured in the Ross Catalog of 1883 which also features the Ross-Zentmayer stands on this web site. It has the polarizing prism on the bottom, and features three swing-out selenites above, which may be used individually or in any combination. Each selenite is individually rotatable. There was a removable top lens element for use with higher power objectives but this is no longer with this example. This condenser is shown in place on the microscope to the left. Ross offered a choice of either a nosepiece analyzer, as seen here, and installed on the microscope to the left, or an over-the-eyepiece analyzer, number 4 in the catalog engraving below. The nosepiece analyzer was more inconvenient to attach, but could be used with both binocular and monocular arrangements. Another example of this apparatus with the number 2 polarizer lens in the illustration, as well as the top lens for higher power work can be seen here.
