DESCRIPTION:

This cylinder-type pocket microscope is opaque except at the ends. This example has a glass disk in the middle of the barrel but is missing the one which sat at the top. Like other examples, the top glass was originally held in by a thin lip formed at the eyepiece end of the main barrel and not present at the other end. The instrument measures 67 mm (2 5/8 inches)high. The barrel measures 27.5 mm (about 1 1/16 inches) in diameter and has a slightly darkened brass finish with a decoration in the center. The decoration consists of two thin black lines with an embossed periodic pattern in the center of the two lines; this embossing holds the center glass firmly in position. The darkened brass is coated with lacquer, so this is apparently its original and intended appearance. The end caps are both brightly finished lacquered brass. There is no case with this instrument. The reason for the middle glass disk is a mystery, as the short-focal length bead lens cannot focus on an object that far away, and was designed to focus on the missing top glass disk.
