THE ORIGINAL FORM OF 'NEW MICROSCOPE' OF POWELL & LEALAND

MAKER: POWELL & LEALAND

MODEL: 'NEW MICROSCOPE'

DATED: 1843

SIGNED ON THE ARM: 'Powell & Lealand, Makers, London' and also dated '1843'

THIS PAGE: Powell and Lealands Livebox

The Powell & Lealand livebox stores in the accessory case. It is an improvement on Varley's invention. Like the Varley type, it features a raised tablet on the bottom with a surrounding trough. The top cap is different in that it has two parts. The bottom part screws into the top, holding the glass in place. This makes changing and cleaning the glass much easier. Also different than Varley's, the top goes on by simple press-fit rather than screwing on. The screwing on action of Varley's original could deform the subject(s).
