THE ORIGINAL FORM OF 'NEW MICROSCOPE' OF POWELL & LEALAND-CASE

MAKER: POWELL & LEALAND

MODEL: 'NEW MICROSCOPE'

DATED: 1843

SIGNED ON THE ARM: 'Powell & Lealand, Makers, London' and also dated '1843'

TRADE LABEL ON INSIDE OF DOOR: Powell & Lealand, Opticians, 24 Clarendon Street, Somers Town.

The original case for the Powell & Lealand 1843 microscope features the trade label pasted to the inside of the door which reads: 'Powell & Lealand, Opticians, 24 Clarendon Street, Somers Town. At the top of this label is written in pen and ink: 'S.H.Swayne', very likely Samuel H. Swayne, the original owner. The microscope slides in to the case front first. The case is missing some parts of its mouldings and has some cracks. It has some of its original furniture to hold the disassembled free-standing bulls eye condenser, and the accessory box, though the latter is missing.
