limbs At first glance all the number twos would appear to have exactly the same limb. This is not quite true. Although the style remained the same, as time went on it is clear that the limb, which tapered slightly in the middle on the earlier models, became thicker and more uniform in the forward-backward dimension. My No 2 from 1895 narrows and has a thickness of 15 mm at its midpoint, but on the 1899 model, it is completely uniform, and is a substantially thicker 20 mm. What's more, the portion that attaches to the optical tube is also thicker on the later model, measuring only 6 mm on the 1895 version and 9 mm on the 1899 version. The earlier model did not have a hole in the limb for accessories but the 1899 example does. This hole could accomodate, e.g. a silver side reflector, limb bullseye, or limb-mounted stage forceps.
