holos fram Microscope Males-Watson fine adjustment males-watson fine adjustment Shown here is the Males-Watson two speed fine adjustment, as seen on a Holos Fram microscope. To facilatate the finest work and highest level of convenience, Watson started to produce this type of fine adjustment in 1902. It was shown at a meeting of the RMS that year and is first noted in the Watson catalogy from the same year. In this system, the quicker of the two fine adjustments is the one towards the back of the instrument and the front one, closest to the course adjustment, in the middle of the arm is the finer adjustment. In 1903 Nelson proposed reversing the location of these making the quick fine adjustment closer to the coarse and his design was published in the 1903; Watson also offered to supply Nelson's form. The Males-Watson focusing mechanism was available for the Fram, Holos Fram, Edinburgh H, Royal, and all the Van Heurck microscopes as an option. It was never standard. In the early 1900's it cost an additional £2 to fit this to any of the above; that would be about $350 today(2015). It is found most frequently on Van Heurck Models and seldom seen even on a Holos Fram microscope like the instrument seen here. To see more of this microscope, see the web pages on this site for the Holos Fram.
