c. 3RD QTR 20TH C-1960s

 Microscope

This is a variable magnification tripod- mounted monocular surface inspection microscope made in Japan for the American market and sold by the Lafayette Electronics firm. When setup for use it stands about 6 1/8 inches high minimum and with draw tube extended about 8 1/8 inches. It is made of chrome-plated brass except for the plastic cap of the eyepiece. The drawtube varies the magnification and the outer optical tube slides in the tripod mount to for focusing. The knurled legs are removable so the entire microscope can be stored in a small pouch. A fairly bright external lighting source is needed to use this microscope properly. Ambient indoor lighting is not sufficient. This microscope is signed on the side of the black eyepiece top: LAFAYETTE ACHROMATIC 20-70X JAPAN. It is also signed in tiny letters on each leg: JAPAN. Lafayette sold moderately high quality compound microscopes in the 1960s. This microscope is in very good condition with no major defects.
