These images show the Improved Griffith Club Microscope set up to use a kerosene lamp as light source. Although mine did not come with the parts to hold the lamp on its upright, I made these parts(red arrows, left) to match the rest of the lamp-holding parts and used other examples as models. One image shows the lamp without a reflector, the other shows it with one. In all the illustrations I have seen, the lamp was positioned to the side of the microscope. This would lessen the tendency to cause extraneous glare as the user would look down the eyepiece. A shade (not shown) could also be used to protect the eye from the direct light from the lamp, while its reflected light served to illuminate the specimen.
