DESCRIPTION:

This tiny compound microscope arises from a thin round lacquered brass foot via a an inclination joint to the bottom of the pillar. It measures about 4.9 inches (125 mm) high in focused position with all the objective lenses in place). The round foot has a diameter of about 43.5 mm (1.7 inches) and is about 5 mm (0.2 inches) thick. The stage is about 31.5 mm (1.25 inches) wide and its depth is about 21 mm (0.8 inches). The single-sided gimbaled mirror is attached to the pillar via a pin. Focusing of the main tube is simply push-pull. The objective is the French button type and is divisible. A single lyre-shaped stage clip is attached to a sleeve that rides up or down on the pillar. The original box measures about 143 x 69 x 56 mm (5.6 x 2.7 x 2.2) in outside dimensions.

HISTORY OF THIS MICROSCOPE

french scopefrench scope A very similar microscope (but with a coffin-shaped case and a square pillar) is pictured in Hager's 'Das Mikroskop...' from 1879. He called it a 'mounted pocket microscope.' Another similar sized, but different, French miniature microscope was apparently made which had a ball and socket joint on a thicker and heavier green painted foot. That model was most frequently supplied in a coffin-shaped case like the one shown to the right. Mounting on top of the case by sliding into a dovetail slot is also seen in the little Bertrand-type 'Furnace Microscope' in this collection.
