The optical 'Photo Light Tube' would replace the standard tube. It has a third opening on its bottom, under the objective side, to allow the image to be projected downward, or alternatively, light to be directed upward for viewing opaque specimens. The special patented footplate (see here) has an opening that would allow a camera adapter to be attached at the appropriate location, looking up at the extra opening in the light tube from the bottom, or allowing the mirror or electric illuminator to be attached on the bottom to provide lighting for an opaque specimen. The patent for the footplate specifically mentions these provisions and use.
