A PRELIMINARY LISTING OF THE SIGNATURES AND OTHER ENGRAVED INFORMATION FOR MICROSCOPES BY WALTER BULLOCH AND SUCCESSORS

This page is a preliminary listing of signatures on microscopes made by or attributed to Walter H. Bulloch and his succesors, last updated December, 2014. It is obviously a work in progress, and I would appreciate additional entries. Anyone who contributes will get credit, or if desired, will remain anonymous.

Signatures on microscopes made by Walter H. Bulloch and his successors have a wide variety, each seeming to be found on only a short range of serial numbers. Interestingly, it would seem that microscopes signed by Bulloch alone included the 1879 patent date prominently only until about serial number 282. Following this, the patent was either found only in a hidden location such as the underside of the foot or underside of the stage, or not at all. Also relatively ornate signatures, (and engraved as opposed to stamped serial numbers), seemed to be replaced by plainer ones in signatures after about number 262.

If one excludes very slight variations in the signature, and includes signatures for which an actual microscope, (as opposed to only an engraving of one), is known, it would seem there are about six major types. For a review of these variations in an easier to read and more organized fashion see the Bulloch Signature Page.

COMMENTS:
Only seen on the rotating disk on the foot of #32 as of 2021
COMMENTS:
Only seen on an engraving so far
COMMENTS:
Unknown how long this was used as Nelson declared bankruptcy
COMMENTS:
Apparently the signature on the tube was abandoned early on, and is not seen on instruments later than 1878
COMMENTS:
This Meyrowitz stand is a much later stand and not chronologically related to the other
COMMENTS:
This is the beginning of signatures on the foot and serial number on the end of the same toe as the signature; note that there is no patent date noted presumably because this instrument dates to before 1879. Also the engraved name of W.H. Bulloch is straight and not arched as it appeared in most subsequent stands

COMMENTS:
This signature with 'W.H. Bulloch' in an arc above the straight 'Chicago' is similar to those of serial numbers 132 and 138 with minimal decorative changes. The patent notation is engraved as 'PAT'D 1879' from at least numbers 121 through 177, although in some the 'PAT'D 1879' is in a reverse arc underneath 'Chicago' as seen in number 132. There are decorative marks between 'W.H. Bulloch' and 'Chicago' and another below the 'PAT'D 1879.'
COMMENTS:
The 'PAT'D 1879' is now also curved but in the opposite direction. Decorative marks appear between W.H. Bulloch and Chicago and PAT'd 1879, but not below the patent date.
COMMENTS:
This signature is nearly identical to the prior to the left, except for the fancy larger case 'C' in Chicago, and the fact that the 'PAT'D 1879' is now straight. Furthermore, the decoration between 'CHICAGO' AND 'PAT'D 1879' has moved to below the patent date line.
COMMENTS:
The 'Pat'd 1879' and Bulloch's name are both again straight, but the 'Pat'd' is partly lower case. There is a lot more decoration between the lines and next to the words.
COMMENTS:
Note that in this example, like the next, there is no decoration between the lines but there is decoration above and below the signature.  It is otherwise the same as number 149.
COMMENTS: Note that in this example there is no decoration between the lines like there is in numbers 121 and 132 and 149 but it otherwise the same signature as number 149.

COMMENTS: Note that in this example there is no decoration between the lines, and the Bulloch's name is again curved COMMENTS:
This is the first of two microscopes with the same serial number of 201. This differs from the next example in the the signature of this one has some decoration between the words 'New York' and 'Bulloch's Patent' and also that all of the signature and serial number appears to be engraved, not stamped.
COMMENTS:
This is the second of two microscopes with the same serial number, but in this example the words 'BULLOCH'S PATENT' and the serial number both appear to be stamped, rather than engraved and there is no decoration between lines.
COMMENTS:
This signature is similar but not identical to the one on number 121. The 'C' of Chicago partly surrounds the 'H' and the 'PAT'D 1879' is straight rather than slanted as in 121. Also the decoration under 'PAT'D 1879' is different.
COMMENTS:
This signature, found on 260 and also 262 reflects another subtle change, in that the 'C' does not overlap the 'H' and has little 'squiggle.' In addition, the bottom decoration under the patent date is a different pattern than prior. Finally, instead of 'PAT'D 1879' is is changed to 'PAT. 1879'

COMMENTS:
In this and the next example, the four letter abbreviation for patent, 'PATD.' is used but this time without an apostrophe. Now 'W.H. Bulloch' is stamped rather than engraved. The serial number is found on the underside of the the foot.
COMMENTS:
The signature is very similar to number 268, but the stamp of 'W.H. Bulloch' is stamped closer to the patent date. Again the serial number in found on the underside of the foot.
COMMENTS:
The signature of 'W.H. BULLOCH, CHICAGO, ILL' is found on the right side of the arm, and 'MEYROWITZ BROTHERS, NEW YORK' on the left side; both appear to be stamped. This stand has no serial number at all.
COMMENTS:
The signature on this microscope is very similar to many others  signed by Meyrowitz as 'Maker' and like many of them has an error for the Patent Date of 1880 instead of 1879
COMMENTS:
The signature of  number 328, a Congress model differs slightly from , e.g. number 260 and 262

COMMENTS:
The signature is on one toe of the foot. The arched words 'W.H. BULLOCH' appear with an upward arch, and underneath 'CHICAGO ILL' with a downward arch, the two forming an oval. As in number 268, the serial number is on the underside of the foot. However now the patent date is also on the underside of the foot. This same logo was used on the stage of the student model (serial No. 406), and on the foot of No. 412.
COMMENTS:
The signature is the same as in 392, but on the stage. The serial number of 412 is stamped on the underside of the stage. No patent date is found on this instrument.
COMMENTS:
This time the serial number is between the words 'W.H. Bulloch' arching upward, and the words 'Chicago, Ill' arching downward. In addition the straight signature of 'Meyrowitz Brothers, New York' Appear on the opposite side of the stage.
COMMENTS:
This example is the same as for 513, except the additional Meyrowitz signature does not accompany Bulloch's. Like the prior entry, this signature appears on the stage, but is facing in the opposite direction.
COMMENTS:
In this, the highest serial numbered Bulloch stand I am aware of, and presumably made about 1891, the patent date is no longer found on the top of the foot.
