40X Portable Compound Surface Inspection Microscope
BAUSCH & LOMB
MODEL: THE SHOP MICROSCOPE
AMERICAN
c. 1935
This is a 40X surface inspection microscope with built-in light bulb illumination and built-in measurement reticle, meant to be used in machine shops, metal manufacturing facilities, etc. It has a crinkle
black finish. It stands about 8 inches high in working position.
It is signed on the optical tube: BAUSCH, & LOMB, ROCHESTER, N.Y. U.S.A., 40x
. The objective is signed: BAUSCH, & LOMB 32mm 0.10.
The foot or base of the microscope is flat with a V-shaped cutout in the center to that the microscope can rest securely on a flat or round surface. It has built-in electric illumination with a push-button switch which, by twisting the knob once pushed down can be locked in the on
position. It still works well today. It uses 2 C
batteries (although a transformer for use with 110 volts was an option).
It comes in a leather-covered
case lined with blue velvet, complete with the original instructions.
This microscope, shown in the Bausch & Lomb Optical Instruments for the Examination of Metals catalog from 1931, was catalog number 31-29-33-34, and sold for $30 in 1935. This price during the early days of the Great Depression, would be more than $600 in 2024. This may account for it being relatively uncommon today. This microscope, and its case, are in excellent working condition with no major defects. The set screw that can lock the eyepiece into the tube is missing. The hinges on the rear of the case show some rust but otherwise the case is excellent. The optics are excellent. The instruction booklet is 3.5 X 5 inches. It has some mild wrinkling and is bound by staples which have worn through the paper.
